Actor Gauahar Khan criticised footballer Lionel Messi after Argentina's 3-2 win over Egypt. Her post added to the wider row over the refereeing controversy in the Argentina-Egypt World Cup match.
Actor Gauahar Khan reacted sharply to Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, criticising forward Lionel Messi after the match. Her comments came after Argentina recovered from a two-goal deficit deep into the second half, scoring three late goals to keep their tournament alive and advance to the quarter-finals.
Gauahar shared an Instagram reel highlighting a moment in which Messi covered his mouth after being allegedly hit during the game. The user who posted the reel described it as the saddest moment in football history, referring to Argentina’s win over Egypt and Messi’s attempt to show that he had been hit in the mouth. Gauahar reposted it on her stories with the caption, “What a loser, messy not Messi. Actor of the saddest order (sic).”
Egypt had looked set to pull off one of the biggest knockout upsets of the tournament before the late turnaround. The match also triggered debate over refereeing decisions, with Egypt forward Mostafa Ziko accusing the referee of unfairness after the defeat.
