A 20-year-old law student was allegedly killed in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district by her family in a suspected case of honour killing after she refused to end her relationship with a young man, and five of her family members have now been arrested in connection with the death.

The case came to light after the woman's boyfriend, Harshit, approached the police on Friday with a written complaint alleging that her family had killed her, according to the police.

According to the complaint, the family claimed that the woman, Himanshi, had died due to illness and cremated her on Thursday night before the matter could come to the notice of the authorities.

The police launched a probe following the complaint and arrested five people by Friday night on charges of homicide. Those arrested include Himanshi's mother, her two brothers and two maternal uncles, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Neeraj Kumar said.

In his complaint, Harshit claimed he and Himanshi had been in contact for nearly one and a half years, and that the latter's family had consistently opposed their relationship as they were from different castes.

He alleged that both of them were repeatedly given death threats by Himanshi's family. A CCTV video related to the case has also surfaced.

The footage reportedly shows the moment when Himanshi ran away from her home and reached a shop where Harshit was already present. Reports suggest that the woman's family members arrived at the scene and thrashed the duo.

While demanding justice for Himanshi, Harshit also said that he fears for his own life now. Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
