Preliminary inquiries indicate that the accused, identified as Constable Shivam Kumar Mishra, may have been suffering from severe mental distress. However, officials said the motive behind the firing is yet to be established and will be determined as part of the investigation.
BSF sources said Mishra was under its custody while facing court-martial proceedings, though officials did not specify the case in which the proceedings were initiated. He overpowered the sentry on duty and snatched his service rifle and then allegedly opened indiscriminate fire towards nearby barracks, leaving three BSF personnel with bullet injuries.
The injured personnel were rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead. The third injured jawan is undergoing treatment. BSF personnel detained Constable Mishra soon after the incident.
The victims have been identified as Head Constable Ajay Kumar and Constable Ambadar Suresh. Head Constable Bikas Brahma sustained injuries in the firing and is receiving medical care.
Local police have launched an investigation and are registering a case under relevant provisions of law. Officials said the exact sequence of events is being probed.
