Mehbooba Mufti's daughter Iltija claims family placed under house arrest
Iltija Mufti accused the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the local administration of targeting political opponents ahead of Matyr's Day, which commemorates the 21 civilians killed by Dogra forces in 1931.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Sunday alleged that she and her mother, party chief Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house arrest ahead of Martyrs' Day on July 13.
Sharing a video showing police personnel outside their residence, Iltija accused the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the local administration of targeting political opponents ahead of the event, which commemorates the 21 civilians killed by Dogra forces in 1931.
Martyrs' Day was observed as an official state holiday in Jammu and Kashmir for decades, but the government removed it from the official calendar after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
Iltija said the family had not been informed about the reason for the alleged restrictions. "We have been placed under house arrest on the eve of Martyrs' Day for reasons best known to J&K Police. This is the normalcy they claim to have established in Kashmir?" she said.
She also alleged that the local government was "hand in glove" with the police and accused authorities of using the force to demolish homes and detain political opponents when convenient.
Her remarks referred to the demolition of houses belonging to tribal families in Sidhra, a town in Doda district.
Iltija was recently in the news after she raised concerns over the environmental impact of the Amarnath Yatra.
Sharing images of the shrinking ice lingam at the cave shrine, the PDP leader had questioned the management of the pilgrimage and sought intervention. She also referred to the Supreme Court-mandated cap on the daily number of pilgrims, which she said was fixed at 10,000.
Her remarks came as authorities highlighted a rise in pilgrim turnout following last year's terror attack.
