A major incident of examination malpractice has surfaced in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer after a university flying squad allegedly caught an invigilator dictating answers to students during a Bachelor of Arts (BA) second-year examination.
The Jai Narain Vyas University (JNVU) has sealed 93 answer sheets and launched an investigation into the incident, which came to light on Wednesday after the inspection was carried out on Saturday.
The alleged malpractice took place at Shri Karni College in Kajoi village, where the BA second-year Hindi Literature examination was being conducted between 7 am and 10 am on Saturday.
According to university officials, a flying squad comprising Professor Aman Singh, Suresh Choudhary, Lalit Jhala, and Gaurav Jain reached the examination centre for a surprise inspection. During the visit, the team allegedly found two invigilators, identified as Jai Karan and Om Prakash, dictating answers to students inside the examination hall.
Officials said a preliminary examination of the answer scripts revealed striking similarities in the responses written by several students. Acting on the findings, the university sealed all 93 answer sheets from the examination hall and registered a case of mass cheating.
The university also examined CCTV footage from the examination centre. According to officials, the footage corroborated the allegations by showing invigilators dictating answers to candidates during the examination. A detailed inquiry has now been initiated, and disciplinary action will be taken against those found responsible.
Shyam Sundar Meena, principal of the Government College in Jaisalmer, confirmed the incident, saying the flying squad noticed suspicious activities during the inspection. He said the students whose answer sheets were seized were issued fresh answer books to continue the examination.
Meena added that under university rules, students found guilty of using unfair means could face debarment from examinations for one to three years. A final decision, however, will be taken after a high-level meeting of the university authorities.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Pawan Kumar Sharma said the university follows a zero-tolerance policy towards examination malpractice and that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty. The flying squad also inspected several other examination centres across Jaisalmer and neighbouring Barmer district, where another cheating case was reported from the Shiv examination centre.
