Opposition MPs to meet Wangchuk at hospital to urge him to end 25-day fast

Opposition MPs will visit climate activist Sonam Wangchuk at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital to urge him to end his 25-day fast, sources said on Tuesday. They will assure him that issues linked to alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and accountability in the education sector will be raised in Parliament.
According to the sources, the delegation will tell Wangchuk that the Opposition will take up the matter during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose and CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas are among those expected to meet him.
Earlier, Wangchuk had said he would end his fast if Members of Parliament and leaders of political parties assured him that the issue of accountability in the education sector would be taken up in the Monsoon Session.
However, after the police crackdown on protestors during the Cockroach Janta Party's "Sansad Chalo" march, the activist said he would continue his fast until such an assurance was given.
Wangchuk joined the CJP-led agitation at Jantar Mantar on June 28 and began an indefinite hunger strike in support of students seeking accountability over examination irregularities, reforms in the education system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
He was forcefully shifted by the Delhi Police to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18 and was later moved to Medanta Hospital following a Delhi High Court order. The planned visit by Opposition MPs is aimed at securing an end to his fast while assuring him that the matter will be raised in Parliament.
