How Vijay, in full black attire, made a statement in Karur
Vijay returned to Karur on Friday as Chief Minister months after a stampede at his rally killed 41 people. Dressed entirely in black, he appeared to signal grief and solidarity with the affected families.

Months after a tragic stampede at his rally in Karur killed 41 people, Vijay returned to the Tamil Nadu city on Friday, this time as the Chief Minister. His visit carried emotional weight, and Vijay was oblivious to the fact. On Friday, Vijay ditched his usual black-and-white suit and was dressed entirely in black, from head to toe. By choosing a colour widely associated with mourning and grief, Vijay sent a direct message of solidarity to the families affected by the stampede.
The all-black attire sent a powerful statement. It conveyed that his rally in Karur was not a celebration, but an occasion to remember the horrific tragedy that occurred on September 27, 2025. It was an attempt to communicate empathy with the families of the victims.
In many cultures, people usually steer clear of wearing black clothes during events or occasions. However, black holds a special place in Dravidian ideology. It is often used to signify the condition of the oppressed. The colour also stands for revolution, especially in Tamil Nadu.
"Vijay returning to Karur in black attire is a powerful statement. Sometimes, leadership communicates just as strongly through symbolism as it does through words!" Navaneeth, a political commentator, tweeted.
VIJAY SENDS A MESSAGE IN KARUR
On Friday, Vijay matched his choice of attire with a careful choice of words, calling the stampede a deep scar in his life. In his opening remarks, he did not attempt to shift blame, but tried to connect with the people of Karur.
"I am with you... You are blaming me for the event. I was in a lot of pain at home," the actor-politician said.
The stampede occurred as a massive crowd thronged Vijay's campaign rally at Velusamypuram in Karur. It soon spiralled into chaos as people jostled to have a glimpse of the Jana Nayagan star. Vijay's late appearance also complicated matters, leading to the surge. The CBI is probing the case.
At the rally, Vijay also announced that a memorial would be set up for the victims of the stampede. It was only in the latter half of his speech that he sought to pin blame on the police for the tragedy.
"The Karur police could have alerted us... There was more crowd than expected. Police could have even cancelled the meeting. The police have all the rights. But they enacted the drama of inviting us to Karur from the highway," Vijay said.
He then sought to drag in the DMK as well, even though he never explicitly named the party or the then Chief Minister Stalin.
"Who is really responsible for this... who orchestrated this," Vijay asked.
Later in the day, Vijay will hand over government job appointment letters to 32 family members of the stampede victims.
