Why Karur tragedy didn't sink Vijay's ship

It's nearly a year since 41 people were killed at Vijay's election rally in Karur. Now the Chief Minister, Vijay is visiting Karur, from where he rushed away after the tragedy. He will give letters of compassionate appointments to family members of 32 victims. Here's how Vijay navigated the Karur tragedy with heart and mind.

For nearly a year, Karur has remained the most difficult chapter in Vijay's political journey — from a debutant politician to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The district in Tamil Nadu that witnessed the biggest tragedy of Vijay's election campaign is now welcoming him again on Friday, but this time not as an opposition leader seeking votes, but as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister returning to fulfil a promise he made to grieving families in the aftermath of the tragedy. The Chief Minister visited Karur dressed in black as a symbol of grief and respect for the lives lost in the tragedy.

Forty-one people were killed, and 110 were injured during a stampede in September 2025 at an election rally of Vijay, the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). That tragedy would have been enough to sink any political campaign, and surely that of a newcomer. But Vijay navigated the situation with both brain and heart.

Precious human lives were lost, and a delay in Vijay's arrival was blamed for the tragedy. Grieving families need understanding, compassion and solace. That's why Vijay's visit to Karur, the first since the stampede, is significant.

It is more than an administrative tour. It is a return to a site of tragedy that invited sharp criticism of TVK's preparedness, tested Vijay's leadership, and forced him to rethink the way the party conducted public rallies.

As Vijay prepares to hand over government jobs to the families of the victims and launch major investment projects in the district, here's a look at how he handled one of the darkest moments of his political career.

VIJAY'S DELAYED ENTRY TO KARUR TO RALLY LED TO STAMPEDE

The tragedy occurred on September 21, 2025, when a massive crowd gathered for Vijay's election campaign rally in Karur. While the TVK functionaries had informed authorities that around 15,000 people were expected, the turnout far exceeded the estimates to watch their beloved film star.

More than 5,000 supporters had followed Vijay from Namakkal district, the place where Vijay held a campaign before Karur, swelling the crowd far beyond the venue's capacity.

The situation deteriorated further as Vijay arrived nearly six hours behind schedule. As thousands waited in the scorching heat, many reportedly fainted from dehydration even before the rally began.

Eager supporters climbed trees, compound walls and nearby structures to catch a glimpse of the actor-politician. Several of these makeshift vantage points collapsed, triggering panic that quickly turned into a deadly stampede. By the end of the night, 41 people had lost their lives, and nearly 110 others were injured.

The immediate aftermath sparked intense scrutiny of Vijay and his TVK. Vijay's political opponents and political experts argued that the tragedy was not merely an accident but the result of poor planning, inadequate crowd management and the organisers' failure to provide even basic amenities such as drinking water despite the massive turnout.

Vijay's delayed arrival came under severe criticism, with opponents contending that the prolonged wait had aggravated the situation.

VIJAY'S VISION AND COMMITMENT QUESTIONED BY CRITICS

Chennai-based political analyst, Ramu Manivannan, questioned both Vijay's political preparedness and his response to the crisis. "Time and again, he has shown himself to be without a concrete plan, clear vision or any real commitment. Yes, he is a mega star, but that does not make him a mass politician or a true leader of the people. What we are witnessing is someone leveraging his cinematic fame for political advantage, without any grounding in public ethics or responsibility," he told India Today Magazine in 2025.

The criticism intensified because, even as the death toll was still being compiled, Vijay left for Chennai on a chartered flight from Tiruchirappalli. People called him out for being insensitive.

"A man who runs from crises and avoids facing difficult situations cannot be expected to govern effectively. Admiration on the screen does not translate to governance in the streets," said Manivannan.

Vijay declined to speak to journalists both at the airport and after reaching his residence, choosing instead to issue a condolence message on social media. He announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.

The legal consequences were equally significant. Police registered criminal cases against several senior TVK functionaries.

HOW VIJAY HANDLED THE KARUR STAMPEDE AND ITS FALLOUT

After all the backlash and criticisms, the Karur stampede also became a turning point in Vijay's political functioning.

Days after the incident, Vijay released an emotional video message saying, "All the truths will come out soon", while describing the stampede as the most painful experience of his life.

"I have never faced such a painful situation in my life. My heart is filled with pain, only pain," Vijay said in a five-minute-long video.

Instead of immediately returning to Karur, Vijay chose to reach out privately to the bereaved families through video calls, assuring them of support. According to party insiders, the tragedy also prompted a major rethink within TVK.

The party substantially curtailed the scale of Vijay's campaign rallies, adopted stricter crowd management protocols and became more cautious about organising large public gatherings during the remainder of the election campaign.

VIJAY'S VISIT TO KARUR AS CHIEF MINISTER OF TAMIL NADU

Nearly a year later, the political system of Tamil Nadu has changed dramatically. Vijay is no longer an opposition leader defending his party's actions, but is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

His visit to Karur is therefore both symbolic and administrative. Besides laying the foundation stone for Evervan Kothari Footwear Private Limited's Rs 1,700-crore manufacturing project at Manavasi near Krishnarayapuram, Vijay will hand over compassionate appointment orders to 32 family members of those who died in the stampede. The beneficiaries will be inducted into various government departments according to their educational qualifications.

"I live with the pain of losing my brothers and sisters, and the DMK is still blaming me, saying that I went into hiding. They kept asking me if I would speak anything. But did the police provide security commensurate with the crowd that had assembled in Karur that day?" Vijay questioned during his address in Karur.

Speaking to India Today TV, Vimal, who lost his one-and-a-half-year-old son, Dhruvan, in the stampede, is getting a government job. "I believe providing me with the job is the right and positive thing to do," Vimal said.

For many of the bereaved families, however, the visit carries a significance beyond official announcements. In the months following the tragedy, Vijay had promised that he would personally return to Karur and meet them. Supporters now describe his first visit as Chief Minister as the fulfilment of that assurance, a moment Vijay's fans see as their Thalapathy keeping his word.

Will the visit heal the wounds of Karur victims is a question whose answer is always a no. The tragedy remains the defining crisis of Vijay's political career, one that exposed the risks of translating cinematic popularity into mass political mobilisation. But as the Chief Minister returns to the district where his leadership faced its severest test, Karur is no longer just a reminder of a nightmare, it is also the place where Vijay's response to that tragedy will continue to be judged.
