CM Vijay unveils Rs 1,000-crore makeover plan for Perambur, women's safety in focus
One of the key proposals in the Rs 1,000-crore makeover plan for Perambur is a women's safety initiative, as well as six smart bus shelters equipped with CCTV cameras.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has unveiled a development package worth nearly Rs 1,000 crore for his Perambur Assembly constituency, with projects focused on urban infrastructure, housing, women's safety and public spaces.
In the April Assembly elections, Vijay won the Perambur constituency by more than 38,000 votes, defeating candidates from both the DMK and the AIADMK in a landmark victory that cemented his position in Tamil Nadu politics.
He also won the Tiruchy East constituency, but vacated it to retain Perambur.
According to sources, one of the key proposals discussed under the Chief Minister's MLA Local Area Development (LAD) fund is a women's safety initiative, as well as six smart bus shelters equipped with CCTV cameras, mobile charging ports, Wi-Fi connectivity and round-the-clock live monitoring linked to a central control room.
Four additional smart bus shelters with similar facilities are proposed for other parts of North Chennai as well.
Perambur is also set to get the region's first pedestrian plaza at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore.
Planned along North Avenue, the project will feature a dedicated food street on one side and a pedestrian-only public space on the other, drawing inspiration from the popular Anna Nagar food street.
The proposal for the pedestrian plaza was first floated in 2024 during the previous DMK government.
Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Dr Sameeran told India Today that the projects were discussed during a review meeting chaired by Vijay on Monday.
He said the Chief Minister had directed officials to prepare a detailed project report for the pedestrian plaza at the earliest.
On Monday, Vijay visited Perambur for the first time since assuming office, during which he inaugurated his newly renovated MLA office, which features a dedicated workspace for the Chief Minister, CCTV surveillance, and a 10-member team to handle daily public grievances and constituency-related work.
The office also houses an integrated Common Service Centre to facilitate faster delivery of civic and government services.
During the visit, Vijay also launched a dedicated public grievance mobile application for Perambur residents, enabling citizens to submit and track complaints related to electricity, water supply, roads, sanitation and access to government welfare schemes.
