Awarapan 2 box office Day 1: Emraan Hashmi scores career-best, beats predecessor

Actor Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 has opened on a strong note at the Indian box office, but its biggest victory may be against its own predecessor. Arriving nearly two decades after the 2007 original, the Nitin Kakkar directorial has not only surpassed the first film’s opening-day collection but has also emerged as Hashmi’s biggest opener to date.

As per early estimates by Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 earned around Rs 21 crore nett in India on Day 1. The film recorded approximately 45 per cent occupancy across theatres, with 9,033 shows. Its India gross collection is estimated at Rs 25.20 crore.

The sequel also collected an estimated Rs 2 crore from overseas markets, taking its opening-day worldwide gross to approximately Rs 27.20 crore.

With this, Awarapan 2 has comfortably outperformed the original Awarapan on its opening day.

Released in 2007, Awarapan opened to around Rs 79 lakh net on Day 1 and went on to earn approximately Rs 2.88 crore during its opening weekend. In comparison, Awarapan 2 has already collected nearly 27 times the original film’s opening-day figure in a single day.

The sequel’s opening is also a major milestone for Emraan Hashmi. Before Awarapan 2, his biggest opening day came with Baadshaho, which earned Rs 12.60 crore nett in 2017. His other notable openers include Raaz 3, which collected Rs 10.47 crore on Day 1 in 2012, and Raaz Reboot, which opened at Rs 5.30 crore in 2016.

With Rs 21 crore on Day 1, Awarapan 2 has comfortably surpassed all these figures to become Hashmi’s biggest opening-day grosser.
