Aamir Khan faces fatwa; UP cleric says marriage to Gauri Spratt is against Sharia
A Uttar Pradesh cleric has objected to Aamir Khan's marriage to Gauri Spratt and issued a fatwa over their interfaith union. The remarks have stirred debate, while the actor and his team have remained silent.

Actor Aamir Khan's marriage to Gauri Spratt has sparked controversy after Uttar Pradesh Shahi Chief Mufti Maulana Chaudhary Ifrahim Hussain objected to the union and issued a fatwa, claiming that a Muslim man cannot marry a woman from a non-Islamic faith under Sharia.
The remarks came days after Aamir and Gauri married in a private registered ceremony on July 5, 2026. The actor has not responded to the comments, and his team has also remained silent.
According to ANI, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, identified as the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, issued the fatwa over Aamir's marriage to Gauri, saying it was not permissible under Sharia because she is not a Muslim.
In a video that has surfaced online, the cleric said that Islam forbids Muslim men from marrying non-Muslim women. He further stated that anyone entering into such a marriage would be committing a sin and that those who refuse to acknowledge it as such would ultimately be answerable to Allah.
The cleric also said he strongly objected to Aamir's third marriage, adding that such unions tarnish the image of Sharia and Islam.
The remarks have since triggered discussion online, drawing mixed reactions from social media users.
The controversy came soon after Aamir addressed "love jihad" allegations surrounding his marriage, saying his family has always embraced interfaith relationships and that neither Gauri Spratt, Reena Dutta nor Kiran Rao converted their religion. He had said all three marriages were civil marriages.
Gauri Spratt is a Bengaluru-based entrepreneur associated with the beauty and wellness industry. She also has a son from her previous marriage.
Before marrying Gauri, Aamir was married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. The couple divorced in 2002 after 16 years of marriage. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The two welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, through surrogacy in 2011 before announcing their separation in 2021.
