Anurag Kashyap stands by Sonam Wangchuk, calls the government's silence deafening
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has backed Sonam Wangchuk as the activist continues his hunger strike for 18th day. His post sharpened focus on the government's silence as concerns grow over Wangchuk's health.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has extended his support to activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk amid his ongoing hunger strike. He shared a post on social media and criticised the government's silence, calling it "deafening." Praising Wangchuk's courage, Kashyap said only someone with deep empathy and a commitment to truth and justice could undertake such a protest.
Sharing a post on his Instagram story, the 52-year-old actor-director wrote, “There was a time when hunger strike had some meaning. People don’t go on hunger strike just like that. It’s really troubling when the system becomes so indifferent to people’s lives. Only a man as empathetic and a believer of truth and justice has the courage to do that (sic).”
Continuing, “I don’t have the courage to do what Sonam Wangchuk is doing. But the silence from the powers to be is deafening to the point that it is a proof of their guilt and their murderous intent. I stand is with the brave heart that Sonam Wangchuk is (sic).”
In a separate post, he condemned the administration in Hindi and wrote, “Behre bhi itne behre nahin hotey, aur andhe bhi itne andhe nahin hotey. jaanwar aur rakshason ke dil bhi itne patthar nahin hotey. Ye unse bhi badtar aadamkhor hain . Chup rehne mein sharam aaney lagi hai." (Even the deaf are not this deaf, and even the blind are not this blind. Even animals and monsters don't have hearts this stone-hearted. They are worse than them—human predators. Remaining silent has become something to be ashamed of) (sic)."
Anurag Kashyap joins the league of other stars including Zeenat Aman, Abhay Deol, Omi Vaidya, Rubina Dilaik and others who have expressed their support for Wangchuk.
Wangchuk’s hunger strike
The 59-year-old activist has now completed 17 days of fasting and has emerged as the face of the protest movement. A petition filed in the Delhi High Court has requested urgent medical intervention for Wangchuk, asking that authorities force-feed him to end his 17-day hunger strike. The activist has been on an indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar. Organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the protest demands the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak scandal.
Visuals of a frail-looking Wangchuk lying on a white mattress and surrounded by medics have gone viral over the past few days. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke has been a constant presence by his side.
