Director Puri Jagannadh's mother dies at 96, granddaughter shares tribute

Telugu filmmaker Puri Jagannadh’s family is mourning the death of his mother, fondly called Ammaji, who died on Saturday, July 25, at the age of 96. The news came into the public domain after Puri’s daughter Pavithra shared an emotional Instagram Story on Sunday, remembering her grandmother and the bond they shared.

Pavithra’s message drew condolences from fans, members of the Telugu film industry and other well-wishers. While Puri Jagannadh has not issued a separate public statement on his mother’s death, and the family has not shared further details about the circumstances of her death, Pavithra’s tribute has become the family’s first public expression of grief.

In her post on Instagram, Pavithra recalled the affectionate way Ammaji addressed her and wrote about missing her deeply. She wrote, "Who will call me ‘Chinnathalli’ now? Who will kiss me so lovingly? I wish I could spend just one more day with you. I would give you the biggest hug, just like I did on your 96th birthday. I miss you, Grandma (sic)." Her message was widely shared on social media, with many people offering support to Pavithra, Puri Jagannadh and their family.

Over the years, Puri Jagannadh has directed several popular films, including Badri, Itlu Sravani Subramanyam, Idiot, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, Shivamani, Pokiri, Desamuduru, Businessman and Temper. On the professional front, Puri Jagannadh is currently working on his next directorial venture, Slum Dog 33 Temple Road. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead and also features Tabu, Vijay Kumar, Brahmaji and VTV Ganesh in important roles. National Award-winning composer Harshavardhan Rameshwar is handling the music, and the project is being jointly produced by Puri Connects and JB Motion Pictures. It is expected to release in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
