A fresh spell of monsoon rain is set to continue over eastern and northeastern India on Thursday, July 16, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh.

Several other states are also likely to receive heavy showers, while hot and humid conditions are expected to persist across parts of northwest India despite isolated rainfall.

The changing weather is being driven by a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha-West Bengal coast.

According to the IMD, the system is likely to strengthen into a well-marked low-pressure area over the next two days as it moves northwestwards across north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, helping sustain widespread monsoon activity over eastern India.

HEAVY RAIN TO DRENCH NORTHEAST

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh on July 16.

Heavy rainfall is also likely across Assam and Meghalaya, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and Uttarakhand.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected at isolated locations in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Elsewhere, scattered to isolated rainfall is expected over parts of central, western and southern India, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Konkan and Goa, Chhattisgarh and much of the northeast are likely to continue receiving widespread monsoon rainfall over the coming days.

HUMID HEAT TO GREET DELHI AGAIN

Although isolated rainfall is likely over Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, the IMD has said hot and humid conditions will continue over these regions on Thursday.

Similar weather is expected over Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and coastal parts of Karnataka, making conditions uncomfortable despite occasional showers.

Heatwave conditions are also likely to persist in isolated pockets of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

The latest forecast comes after parts of Odisha witnessed extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday, while heavy rain was also recorded in Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

The strengthening low-pressure system is expected to keep rainfall activity elevated over eastern India through the second half of the week before the monsoon expands further into parts of north India.
