Anthropic updates Claude voice mode, it is now smarter and does complex tasks
Anthropic has upgraded Claude's voice mode. Users can use it on Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku AI models. The update comes along with the ability to interact with apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Canva, and more.
Anthropic’s Claude voice mode just got a significant upgrade. The update comes weeks after OpenAI rolled out new conversational models for ChatGPT’s voice mode. Anthropic announced on Thursday that Claude users can now choose from AI models such as Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku for voice conversations.
What's new in voice mode
The upgraded voice mode is designed to handle longer, more substantial conversations. That can be getting feedback on communication style, talking through a pitch before a client meeting, or brainstorming product research out loud.
Beyond that, perhaps more notably, you can do things commanding the AI, and it will act like an agent, such as its voice mode can now tap into connected apps including Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. This means users can ask Claude to reschedule a meeting, draft an email, or create a document in Notion, all through voice. Notably, that's a meaningful difference from OpenAI's voice mode, which improved its conversational tone but still can't reach into other tools to actually complete tasks.
Anthropic had already added multilingual support to voice mode earlier this year in beta, and the feature now supports English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish.
What hasn't changed
Despite the model upgrade, Anthropic hasn't changed the underlying voice architecture. An Anthropic spokesperson told Engadget that voice mode still uses a turn-based system, meaning Claude listens, pauses to think, and then responds, rather than processing speech and generating a response simultaneously like OpenAI's GPT-Live system.
In practice, that likely means conversations with Claude will still feel a bit less fluid than talking to ChatGPT, since there's no improvement to things like interruption handling in this release.
