IFS officer's video shows AI detecting elephant herd, alerting forest team in minutes

An AI-enabled camera detected an elephant herd moving from the forest boundary towards a nearby village. The alert brought a rapid response team to the spot within 15 minutes, helping avert a possible conflict.

A video shared by Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Parveen Kaswan has offered a glimpse into how artificial intelligence is helping prevent human-elephant conflict.

The clip shows a herd of elephants quietly emerging from the forest at night before AI-enabled surveillance cameras detect their movement and trigger an alert, allowing forest officials to respond before the animals reach a nearby village.

Sharing the video on X, Kaswan explained that the incident took place at 12.32 am, when AI-enabled surveillance cameras picked up a herd of elephants moving from the forest boundary towards a neighbouring village.

The footage captures the elephants slowly walking through the darkness, their movement clearly recorded by the night-vision cameras. Moments later, the system identifies the herd and automatically sends an alert to the Division Control Room.

According to Kaswan, the warning was relayed instantly, enabling a nearby rapid response team to reach the location within 15 minutes. Officials then monitored the herd's movement and ensured the elephants were safely guided away, preventing a potential human-elephant conflict.

Calling it a routine operation, Kaswan said such interventions happen almost every night, with frontline forest staff responding to multiple AI-generated alerts and calls from the public to protect both wildlife and nearby communities.

"At 12.32 AM in night, our AI-enabled surveillance cameras detected a herd of elephants moving from the forest boundary towards a nearby village. The alert was instantly relayed to the Division Control Room, and within 15 minutes, nearby stationed rapid response team reached the spot and safely checked the elephants' movement, preventing a potential human-elephant conflict," he wrote.
