Numaya Karu, a Sri Lankan content creator currently based in Dubai, shared the video on Instagram where she was seen sitting in front of a television screen that was streaming her mother’s convocation ceremony.
As her mother appeared on the screen and walked towards the stage to collect her degree, Numaya became emotional and wiped away tears while watching the milestone unfold from afar.

Sharing the video, Numaya wrote a detailed tribute to her mother, describing the sacrifices and challenges she had overcome throughout her life.
She revealed that after her father passed away, her mother took on the responsibility of raising the family while dealing with her own grief. For nine years, she became both a mother and father to her children, while continuing to work and support them.
Numaya also spoke about her mother’s professional journey, explaining that she had taken on the challenge of becoming the first principal of a rural school when the government reopened it after years of closure. She said her mother helped rebuild the school, create opportunities for students and contribute to the wider community while coping with personal losses, including the deaths of both her parents within a year.
Calling her mother an example of resilience, Numaya said she had always watched her put others first and believed her Master’s degree was a moment that belonged entirely to her.
She wrote that while she and her family had supported her mother throughout the journey, watching the achievement from another country brought a mix of pride and sadness.
“The life I’m building here is the life she always wanted for me, but on days like today, the guilt of not being there feels overwhelming,” she wrote.
