Students and teachers at a government primary school in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district were in for a shock after the principal allegedly arrived at the premises carrying a knife and a cleaver.

Officials said that Shikha Singh, principal of the school, was seen carrying the sharp weapons to the premises. Local residents alerted the police and education department, following which a police team and Block Education Officer (BEO) Neeraj Umrao reached the spot. The officers took possession of the knife and cleaver and began questioning those present.

When asked about carrying the weapons, Singh said she felt unsafe but declined to reveal whom she feared.

"I won't keep repeating myself. I feel unsafe. I have already said that, which is why I am bringing them. I will not give the same statement again and again. I will not name anyone right now," she said.

District Basic Education Officer (BSA) Kamlendra Kushwaha said the department took immediate cognisance of the matter after pictures and videos surfaced on social media. A prompt inquiry was ordered soon after. He said that Neeraj Umrao was sent to the school immediately and confirmed that legal action had been initiated against the principal.

Kushwaha said an FIR was being registered, an inquiry report was being prepared, and suspension proceedings had also been initiated against Singh. He added that no one would be allowed to create an atmosphere of fear in an educational institution and that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty.

Umrao said he received information on Friday morning that the school's principal had arrived carrying the weapons. While he was on his way to school, he also received a call from a parent who claimed that Singh had allegedly shown the weapons to one or two parents on the way to the school.

Neeraj Umrao said he recorded statements from teachers and also spoke to Shikha Singh's husband, who told him that she might be experiencing mental health issues. He said family members had been asked to come to the school while police officers recorded her statement and took the weapons into custody.
