Gurugram woman dies after jumping from high-rise, husband accused of harassment

A woman allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the balcony of a high-rise apartment in Gurugram’s Sohna, with her family accusing her husband of domestic violence and harassment.

The incident took place at MVN Athens Society in Sohna. The victim, Deepa, lived with her husband Jitendra and their eight-year-old son Daksh.

According to the FIR filed on the complaint of Deepa’s father Ramkishan, she married Jitendra in 2018 according to Hindu rituals. Her father alleged that Jitendra’s behaviour changed soon after the marriage and that he would frequently consume excessive amounts of alcohol, leading to arguments and physical assaults at home.

Ramkishan further alleged that Jitendra often brought his friend Angad to the house and that the two would sit and drink alcohol there. When Deepa objected to this and asked Jitendra not to bring Angad home, her husband allegedly subjected her to further harassment and physical assault.

According to the complaint, Deepa, distressed by the alleged mental and physical harassment, jumped from the balcony of the flat and died on the spot.

The incident came to light at around 6 am, when police were informed that a woman had jumped from a flat in the society. Police and the scene-of-crime team reached the spot, examined the scene and took the body into custody before sending it for post-mortem examination.

The forensic team also collected Deepa’s mobile phone and blood samples from the scene as evidence. Police said Jitendra was present in the flat at the time of the incident.

On the basis of Ramkishan’s complaint, Sohna City police registered an FIR against Jitendra and his friend Angad under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The family has held Jitendra and Angad directly responsible for Deepa’s death and sought strict legal action against them.
