CBI files sealed report in Calcutta HC on RG Kar doctor rape-murder conspiracy

The CBI on Thursday submitted a report to the Calcutta High Court on its investigation into an alleged conspiracy in the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at Kolkata's government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.

A division bench of Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh said the matter, which is being heard in-camera, will be taken up again for arguments on November 20.

The central agency filed the report in a sealed cover in line with the court's direction at the previous hearing.

On August 28, the division bench had asked the CBI to submit a report indicating how the probe had traced the alleged involvement of certain persons in the conspiracy linked to the rape and murder of the medic at the state-run hospital in north Kolkata.

Earlier, on May 21, the court had ordered the setting up of a three-member special investigation team of the CBI, headed by its joint director, east, to examine developments from the time the trainee doctor had dinner on the night of August 9, 2024, until her cremation.

The doctor's parents had moved the court, alleging that evidence was destroyed and that attempts were made to downplay the incident in its immediate aftermath.

The young doctor was raped and murdered in the hospital on the night of August 9, 2024. The case triggered large protests and night vigils in West Bengal and sparked outrage across the country.

In the case, former civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was convicted and sentenced by the Sealdah sessions court to imprisonment for the remainder of his life for the rape and murder of the on-duty doctor.

The hearing before the Calcutta High Court will now continue on November 20, with the CBI's sealed report forming part of the court's consideration of the alleged conspiracy in the case.
