Kanpur woman shot dead after intervening in sister's marital dispute

A 28-year-old woman was shot dead in Kanpur after she stepped in during a dispute linked to her younger sister’s marital row, police said on Monday. The woman, identified as Chandni, was taken to hospital after being shot in the abdomen, but doctors declared her dead.
Police said the shooting appears to be connected to a long-running dispute between Chandni’s younger sister Sarojini and her husband Santosh, who have been living separately for nearly two years and have a court case pending since 2024. The exact sequence of events and the role of each suspect are still being verified, they said.
The incident took place at Satti crossing in the Cantonment area of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur around 8:30 pm on Sunday, when police received a firing alert through Dial-112, Commissioner of Police Raghubir Lal told PTI. Chandni suffered a gunshot wound to her abdomen and was rushed to KPM Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, he said.
According to the victim’s family, trouble began earlier in the evening when Santosh visited his in-laws’ house around 5 pm and got into an argument with Sarojini. Police said Sarojini slapped him during the exchange. A couple of hours later, Santosh’s brother Vinod, cousin Anshu and two or three other men allegedly arrived at the house on motorcycles, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Satyajeet Gupta said.
The group confronted the family over the slap and began abusing them. When Chandni intervened, Vinod pulled out a country-made pistol and shot her in the abdomen at close range, the DCP said. Chandni collapsed on the spot and was taken to KPM Hospital with police help. The accused then fled after firing a shot in the air, causing panic in the area, an official said.
Police and forensic teams inspected the scene and collected evidence, and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Three people have been detained for questioning, while police teams have been formed to trace the remaining suspects, Commissioner Lal said.
A complaint has been filed by Chandni’s family and legal proceedings are underway. Police said the killing appears to be linked to the marital dispute, though the roles of all those involved are still being examined.
