Vijay's Jana Nayagan eyes July release as censor clearance buzz intensifies
Unconfirmed reports say Vijay's Jana Nayagan could reach theatres in July after a long delay. The expected clearance from the censor board this week may help the makers lock the release plan.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minitser Vijay’s long-awaited film, Jana Nayagan, may finally be nearing a confirmed release, with unconfirmed reports suggesting that it could arrive in theatres this July. Speculations are rife that the censor clearance might arrive this week. The makers are reportedly making arrangements for a release later this month, while the film’s certification process is expected to move forward soon.
The film was originally scheduled to release on January 9, but was delayed by nearly six months because of the pending certification process. The delay in securing clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) left fans waiting for an update on the theatrical release plan.
According to the latest industry reports, Jana Nayagan is expected to receive its CBFC certificate this week. After the Tamil certification, the Telugu and Hindi censorship processes are expected to take place as well.
Discussions with overseas and regional distributors will reportedly begin as soon as the movie is cleared.
Reports suggest that the makers are currently eyeing July 16 as the target release date. If that does not work out, July 23 is said to be the next option. July 31 is also being considered, although that remains uncertain as Vijay’s son Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut, Sigma, is scheduled for release on the same day.
It is to be noted that many small and medium-budget films have locked on July 16 and July 23 as their release dates and have begun promotions for the same. If the makers of Jana Nayagan take that into consideration, then they might target August 7, as the slot remains open as of now.
An official announcement on the certification and release date is still awaited.
What led to Jana Nayagan's delay?
The censor board withheld the film's certification after a member raised an internal complaint flagging certain scenes. The member alleged that these scenes could hurt public sentiments. Also, unconfirmed reports suggested that certain scenes in the film could help Vijay's political campaign as the release was scheduled three months ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which he was contesting for the first chief as the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
After the board suggested the film be sent for the revising committee, KVN Productions, the film's production house, sought Madras High Court's intervention to expedite the censor clearance process. However, this snowballed into a month-long legal standoff between the makers and the CBFC.
However, the makers decided to withdraw their petition a month into the legal dispute and agreed to send the film to the revising committee. However, the clearance has still not been issued due to unknown reasons.
Meanwhile, on April 9, a few weeks before the election, the HD (high-definition) print of Jana Nayagan was leaked online. After investigation, the mastermind and key suspects have been arrested.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is being positioned as a special release for Vijay fans, as it marks his final film appearance as he continues his political commitments as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The film has generated significant anticipation, with fans waiting for one last theatrical outing featuring Vijay in a lead role.
