Blue Origin rebuilds rocket launch pad after New Glenn's massive explosion

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded during a routine ground test at Cape Canaveral on May 28, 2026, destroying the vehicle and its only launch pad. CEO Dave Limp has confirmed that reconstruction has begun, with the company targeting a return to flight before the end of 2026.

Blue Origin has begun rebuilding its rocket launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida, less than three weeks after its New Glenn rocket exploded in a massive fireball during a ground test on May 28, 2026.

Speaking at the VivaTech tech conference in Paris on June 17, Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp confirmed that crews have been working around the clock to clear debris, with formal reconstruction starting on June 16. The company is targeting a return to flight before the end of 2026.

It was an ordinary Thursday night on Florida's Space Coast. Then everything changed. The blast was powerful enough to shake homes across the Space Coast.

The explosion destroyed the vehicle and severely damaged Blue Origin's only operational New Glenn launch site. To put things in perspective, it is believed to be the most powerful rocket explosion since the Soviet N1 rocket blew up in 1969.

A static fire test is a routine ground procedure where a rocket's engines are ignited while the vehicle is kept firmly bolted to the launch pad. Nobody was hurt.

Blue Origin was preparing New Glenn for its fourth flight, a mission to carry a batch of Amazon's Leo internet satellites into orbit, when the accident occurred.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the test was not within the scope of its licenced activities, and there was no impact on air traffic. The company's own investigation into the root cause is still ongoing.

THE SILVER LINING IN THE SMOKE

Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, also present at the VivaTech conference, called it a "gut punch" for the entire team but said that further analysis showed how much worse things could have been.

The key infrastructure elements, such as the propellant storage facilities and those for storing hydrogen, natural gas, and liquid oxygen, came through unscathed.

In rocketry, these are called long lead items, meaning components that take considerable time and money to manufacture and install. Preserving them shaves months off the recovery timeline.

The transporter-erector, the strongback structure that delivers and raises the rocket upright on the pad, was destroyed beyond repair.

Instead of rebuilding it, Blue Origin will replace it with an alternative vertical integration system, an approach the company had already been developing independently.

WHAT COMES NEXT

Limp has set an ambitious target: fly New Glenn again before the end of 2026.

Industry veterans have called this timeline aggressive. When SpaceX's Falcon 9 exploded on a pad in 2016, it took SpaceX more than a year to return that pad to service, though the company had backup launch pads to rely on in the meantime.

Blue Origin has no such backup. Launch Complex 36 is its only orbital launch facility for New Glenn.

Limp has also confirmed that the company's uncrewed Blue Moon Mark 1 lunar lander mission is now expected to fly in early 2027.

The New Glenn rocket is consumed by fire during the static fire test that was meant to clear it for its fourth flight. Experts described it as the most powerful on-pad rocket explosion since the Soviet N1 disaster of 1969.

This lander was selected by Nasa as part of the Artemis programme, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon's surface.

The first Artemis lunar landing mission is scheduled for 2028, and Blue Origin's ability to get Launch Complex 36 running again will heavily influence how much of a role the company plays in that timeline.

For now, Blue Origin is pressing ahead, one debris pile at a time.
