Monsoon to turn vigorous: India to get heavy rain, thunderstorms on Friday
The monsoon is entering another active phase, with multiple weather systems coming together to reshape rainfall patterns across India. Here's where the biggest impact is expected tomorrow.
Fresh spells of monsoon rain are set to continue across large parts of the country on Friday, July 24.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of western and northwestern India, while several eastern, northeastern and Himalayan states are also likely to receive widespread showers.
The active southwest monsoon is being supported by multiple weather systems, including the monsoon trough stretching from Rajasthan to the northeast Bay of Bengal and cyclonic circulations over central Assam and southeast Rajasthan.
These systems are helping draw abundant moisture inland, sustaining widespread rainfall over many regions.
HEAVIEST RAIN IN RAJASTHAN, MAHARASHTRA, GUJARAT
According to the IMD, East Rajasthan, the Gujarat region and Madhya Maharashtra are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated places likely to witness extremely heavy downpours on July 24.
Konkan and Goa, Saurashtra and Kutch, and West Rajasthan are also forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Heavy rainfall is also likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Coastal Karnataka and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected over several states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand and Coastal Karnataka.
MONSOON TO REMAIN ACTIVE
The IMD expects rainfall activity to remain widespread over many parts of the country in the coming days.
Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Chhattisgarh are among the regions likely to continue receiving frequent rainfall through the week, while Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Maharashtra are expected to remain under an active monsoon spell.
The department's forecast also indicates widespread or fairly widespread rain across much of central, western, eastern and northeastern India on July 24, underscoring that the southwest monsoon remains firmly active over the country.
The latest forecast comes after several parts of western India recorded intense rainfall over the past 24 hours.
South Gujarat witnessed exceptionally heavy rain, while Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, East Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh also reported very heavy rainfall, highlighting the strength of the ongoing monsoon phase.
