An employee shared how a job offer was withdrawn on the very same day after he asked for time to read the contract carefully before signing it.

The experience was shared on Reddit's r/recruitinghell forum, where the user posted about a hiring process that appeared to end abruptly despite successfully clearing the final round of interviews.

According to the post, the candidate had been verbally offered the position and was presented with the employment paperwork. Before signing, however, he requested permission to take the offer letter home and review it thoroughly.

Explaining the reason behind the request, the employee said he had previously signed a contract without reading all the details carefully and later regretted it. Wanting to avoid making the same mistake again, he decided to go through the document properly before accepting the offer.

The hiring manager initially appeared to have no issue with the request. The candidate claimed he was told he could review the offer at home and was also assured that additional information regarding some of his questions would be shared later.

However, according to the post, the situation changed dramatically within hours.

The employee said the hiring manager later contacted him the same day to inform him that the company had decided to withdraw the offer altogether.

Shocked by the decision, he said he pleaded with the company to reconsider, but was ultimately told that the decision was final.

The experience left him questioning what had gone wrong.

“I cried so hard knowing I lost an opportunity for just being meticulous to an offer,” he wrote, adding that the incident had significantly affected his confidence and self-esteem.

The employee further claimed that he later noticed the same position being advertised again. Despite feeling embarrassed about the situation, he reached out to the company once more to express his continued interest in the role, but said he never received a response.

The story prompted strong reactions from fellow Reddit users, many of whom argued that reviewing an employment contract before signing was a reasonable and responsible thing to do.

Several commenters suggested the company's sudden change of stance raised questions about the hiring process itself. Some speculated that the employer may have been uncomfortable with a candidate who wanted to carefully scrutinise the terms of employment and potentially negotiate certain clauses.

Others felt the employee had likely avoided a problematic workplace, arguing that any organisation unwilling to give candidates time to review a contract was displaying a red flag.

At the same time, a few users offered a different perspective. They agreed that asking to read the offer letter was entirely appropriate but suggested that discussing negative experiences with a previous employer during the process may have inadvertently created the impression that he could be difficult to manage or negotiate with.

Even so, the overwhelming sentiment in the discussion was that candidates should always take the time to read employment contracts thoroughly and should not feel pressured into signing documents without understanding the terms. Many encouraged the employee to stop blaming himself and focus on future opportunities instead.
