Giant pandas arrive in Atlanta under new US-China goodwill loan

Two giant pandas arrived in Atlanta on Sunday morning under an agreement between the Chinese and American governments, making Zoo Atlanta one of only three zoos in the US to house giant pandas. The pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, are on a 10-year loan under a new agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.

Their arrival was announced on Thursday by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a three-day summit with US President Donald Trump. The loan was one of the few concrete outcomes of the state visit, which included expressions of goodwill between the two leaders but no resolution of long-standing differences between the two countries.

Officials said Ping Ping and Fu Shuang left Chengdu in south-western China early on Sunday aboard a dedicated Boeing 777 aircraft called the FedEx Panda Express. Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King said in a statement, "This is a thrilling day for Zoo Atlanta and a historic moment for the City of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, and beyond. We are elated to welcome Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and could not be more excited about sharing that joy with our Members, guests, city, and community in the coming weeks."

Visitors will have to wait before seeing the pandas. Officials said the bears will be quarantined for about a month in a biosecure area of the zoo's new giant panda complex, and no opening date has been confirmed.

Atlanta had bid farewell to its last pandas in 2024, leaving the zoo without the animals. The new agreement was announced in April, but no dates were given then. Both Ping Ping and Fu Shuang were born in 2020 and had been kept at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. According to Xinhua News Agency, Ping Ping, the male, has dark black circles around his eyes, while Fu Shuang, the female, has a forehead that protrudes slightly.

China has long used pandas as part of its global diplomacy, sending the animals abroad on loan programmes as expressions of goodwill and allowing agreements to lapse when tensions rise. Xi had said the loan programme was an example of "friendship between the Chinese and Americans." In all, the two pandas have now reached Atlanta under the new 10-year agreement, but visitors will have to wait until their quarantine period ends.
