Kia India is gearing up to expand its electric vehicle portfolio with the launch of the Syros EV, which is expected to arrive later this month. Dealer sources indicate that unofficial bookings have already commenced for a token amount of Rs 25,000, while fresh undisguised spy shots have revealed the production-spec SUV in full ahead of its debut.

The Syros EV will become Kia's second internal combustion engine (ICE) model to make the transition to an all-electric powertrain in India. Expected to be priced between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), it will also slot in as the brand's most affordable electric vehicle in the country.

Visually, the electric Syros closely resembles its petrol-powered sibling, retaining the boxy proportions and upright stance. However, it receives a closed-off front fascia in place of the conventional grille, a redesigned EV-specific bumper and a front-mounted charging port. The signature vertically stacked LED lighting has been carried over, while newly designed aerodynamic alloy wheels help distinguish the electric version. At the rear, the SUV continues with the familiar vertical LED tail-lamps, complemented by subtle 'EV' badging and a revised bumper.

Inside, the cabin is expected to mirror the layout of the standard Syros, featuring a dual-screen setup for the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster. The electric version is also likely to get paddle shifters for adjusting regenerative braking, along with premium features such as a panoramic sunroof, powered driver's seat, ventilated front seats and rear-seat ventilation. Physical controls for climate and media functions are expected to be retained for added convenience.

Under the skin, the Syros EV is likely to borrow its battery options from the recently launched Carens Clavis EV. Dealer sources suggest buyers will be able to choose between a 42kWh battery pack and a larger 51.4kWh unit. The smaller battery is expected to deliver a claimed driving range of around 420km, while the larger pack could offer up to 520km on a single charge. Power is expected to be sent to the front wheels through a single electric motor, although output figures are yet to be revealed.

Reports also indicate that Kia could offer an industry-leading battery warranty of up to 15 years or even a lifetime warranty, alongside a standard three-year vehicle warranty that may be extendable to seven years or 1.5 lakh kilometres. A buyback assurance programme is also expected to be part of the ownership package.

Once launched, the Kia Syros EV will take on rivals such as the Tata Nexon EV and MG Windsor, strengthening Kia's presence in India's growing mass-market electric SUV segment.
