Video: Bengaluru man harasses woman waiting for cab, flees as she starts filming

A woman has claimed that she was harassed while waiting for a cab on a roadside in Bengaluru, in an incident that has once again sparked concerns over women's safety in public spaces. The accused has since been arrested, police said.
According to the woman, a man, identified by the police as Vijay Ragav, riding a two-wheeler approached her and allegedly abused her using obscene language while she was waiting for her cab in Ramamurthy Nagar. When she began recording on her mobile phone, the accused, the 42-year-old fruit seller, fled the spot.
The woman later shared the video on Instagram, identifying the vehicle's registration number and urging authorities to take action against the accused.
"As a woman, I should be able to wait for my cab without being treated like an object or being propositioned for money. No one should have to experience this kind of harassment in a public place," she wrote.
Describing the encounter, she said the man's words were "intimidating, disrespectful, and made me fear for my safety."
"I am sharing this incident to raise awareness and request immediate action from the concerned authorities. Such behaviour cannot be normalised or ignored," she said, urging law enforcement to identify the accused and ensure accountability.
The woman also appealed to bystanders not to remain silent in the face of harassment.
"Every person deserves to feel safe in public spaces without being subjected to sexual harassment. Please speak up if you witness incidents like these. Silence only emboldens offenders. Public spaces must be safe and respectful for everyone," she added.
Police registered an FIR after the video surfaced on social media.
WHAT THE WOMAN SAID
Speaking about the incident, the woman said she had stepped out of her house to board a Rapido ride for some personal work when the accused approached her. "Within a fraction of a second, he came up to me, started questioning me and then offered me Rs 10,000, asking, 'Will you come?' You can hear it clearly in the video," she said.
She added that she had seen the man around the locality on a few earlier occasions and felt he had been watching her before approaching her that night.
The woman said the incident had left her shaken despite the accused's arrest. While thanking the police and social media users for their support, she said she no longer felt safe in the locality.
"It's not just women, nobody is completely safe because of incidents like this. Men, women, everyone can feel unsafe. I have filed a police complaint, the police have taken action, and I'm grateful for the support I received. But I still don't feel safe living here," she said.
She also claimed that such incidents were not isolated. "This isn't just about this area. Similar incidents have happened in different parts of Bengaluru. I don't understand why people behave like this," she said.
Explaining why she chose to record the encounter, the woman said bystanders often fail to intervene when someone is being harassed. "This isn't the first time something like this has happened. People just stand and watch. When someone actually needs help, they don't come forward. That's why I started recording," she said.
Calling for stronger measures to improve public safety, she urged the authorities to ensure women could move around without fear. "Many people come to Bengaluru to work and build a better future. If you're harassed right outside your own house and don't feel safe in the city where you live and work, that's extremely disturbing. Women's safety needs to be strengthened, and I hope the authorities can ensure my safety and the safety of others," she said.
