A 44-year-old man was allegedly murdered after an SUV driver repeatedly ran him over in Delhi's Rohini, prompting police to register a murder case and investigate the possibility of a larger conspiracy. The accused confessed to murder during questioning by police after he was arrested.

The incident took place on July 16 in the Kanjhawala police station area, where the victim, identified as Deepak, was allegedly struck from behind while riding his scooter before being run over multiple times, police said.

Police have arrested the accused driver and seized the vehicle used in the crime. Police identified the vehicle involved after examining the CCTV footage from a nearby area, where the SUV was seen around the same time as the incident.

According to police, Deepak, a resident of Majra Dabas in Kanjhawala, had left his home on his scooter for some personal work when the incident occurred.

Preliminary findings suggest that an SUV hit his scooter with considerable force from behind, throwing him onto the road. Instead of stopping after the collision, the driver allegedly accelerated the vehicle and drove over the fallen rider.

Police said the assault did not end there. The SUV driver allegedly reversed the vehicle and ran over Deepak again.

During the incident, the victim's scooter reportedly stuck underneath the SUV, causing both the scooter and Deepak to be dragged for several metres.

After the scooter separated from the vehicle, the driver allegedly ran over Deepak multiple times, leaving him with fatal injuries. He died at the scene before any medical assistance could be provided.

The accused, identified as Sagar, was arrested soon after the incident. Police have also taken the SUV into custody for forensic examination.

During questioning, the accused is said to have admitted to his involvement in the killing. However, investigators said he has given inconsistent accounts regarding the motive, making it difficult to establish the circumstances that led to the alleged attack.

Police officials said the brutality of the incident and the sequence of events indicate that it is being treated as a murder rather than a road accident.

Investigators are also analysing forensic evidence, CCTV footage and witness statements to reconstruct the incident. Authorities said further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation, while efforts continue to establish the exact motive behind the killing.
