Cops find Rs 12.5 lakh in jewellery meant for girl's spine surgery, arrest accused
Delhi Police recovered jewellery worth Rs 12.5 lakh stolen from a family saving for their daughter's spine surgery and arrested the alleged burglar. The recovery has allowed the child's treatment at AIIMS to continue without the family mortgaging its house.
The Delhi Police have recovered gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 12.5 lakh that a family had set aside for their six-year-old daughter’s spine surgery at AIIMS, and arrested the burglar in the case. Police said the recovery brought relief to the family, which had been left devastated after the theft.
According to police, the stolen jewellery had been bought using the family’s lifetime savings and by selling their valuables. After the theft, they were considering mortgaging their house to continue their daughter’s treatment, police said.
The case was reported at Keshav Puram police station on July 22 after burglars allegedly broke a window pane of the family’s house in the Ganeshpura area and fled with the jewellery, valued at around Rs 12.5 lakh. Given the circumstances, senior officers directed that the investigation be given priority.
"The family had sold their valuables and pooled together their lifetime savings to raise the money for the surgery. And after the theft, they had begun considering mortgaging their house to continue the treatment," a senior police officer said.
Police said a special team examined technical evidence and tracked down the suspect within six hours. "The arrested accused has been identified as Abhishek alias Raje (25), a resident of Wazirpur, who has previously been involved in two burglary cases. During interrogation, he disclosed the location where he had concealed the stolen ornaments," the officer said.
Police said the stolen valuables were returned to the family, allowing them to go ahead with the child’s treatment without the immediate financial crisis caused by the theft.
"The timely recovery ensured that our daughter’s treatment could continue without interruption. Police not only recovered our hard-earned savings but also restored our hope during one of the most difficult phases of our lives," the family said. Police said a case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
