Mumbai saw an overcast but largely rain-free Thursday morning after days of steady monsoon showers, even as the India Meteorological Department forecast intermittent rain later in the day.

The break from heavy rain brought some relief after prolonged showers had led to waterlogging, tree falls, traffic snarls and disruption to suburban rail services.

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places, along with lightning, thunder and occasional gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

Despite the cloudy conditions, most parts of the city did not receive rain during the morning.

According to the BMC, the island city recorded an average rainfall of 14.21 mm in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Thursday, while the eastern suburbs received 39.37 mm and the western suburbs 28.85 mm.

The civic body said there was a high tide of 3.49 metres at 7 am, while the next high tide is expected at 6.09 pm at 3.62 metres. A low tide is due at 12.29 pm at 2.32 metres.

Officials said public transport services, including suburban local trains, Metro services and BEST buses, were running smoothly. However, commuters said suburban trains were running 5-10 minutes late.
