GOVERNOR APPROVES FULL LITERACY STATUS
The recognition came after Uttarakhand fulfilled the literacy standards laid down by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education. On July 8, Governor Lt Gen (Retired) Gurmit Singh approved the proposal officially recognising Uttarakhand as a fully literate state.
With this milestone, Uttarakhand joins Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim as the sixth state in the country to attain full literacy status. According to officials, the state's literacy rate has now crossed 98 percent, meeting the Government of India's prescribed benchmarks for adult literacy, as reported by news agency PTI.
CHIEF MINISTER HAILS HISTORIC MILESTONE
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the recognition as a historic milestone, crediting the achievement to sustained government initiatives and the active participation of people across the state.
Congratulating the people of Uttarakhand, Dhami said the achievement would strengthen the state's contribution to the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He said such collective efforts would play a key role in realising the goal of a developed India by 2047 and reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring that digital literacy, financial literacy, continuing education and life skills reach every citizen.
The proposal to declare Uttarakhand a fully literate state had earlier received the approval of the state Cabinet on June 19.
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT LAUDS COLLECTIVE EFFORT
State Education Minister Dr Dhan Singh Rawat termed the achievement a matter of pride for every resident of Uttarakhand, saying the government remains committed to providing quality and lifelong education to all in line with the objectives of NEP 2020.
Secretary, School Education, Ravinath Raman said that achieving full literacy lays a strong foundation for the state's social and economic development. Director General of School Education Akanksha Konde credited the coordinated efforts of district administration, teachers, literacy volunteers and local communities for making the milestone possible, as reported by ANI.
