An eyewitness, Arnav Singh, said an electric scooter was being charged on the ground floor when a short circuit triggered the fire. He said residents initially had to escape on their own before emergency teams reached the spot.

"We were upstairs and had to flee as the police had not arrived yet, and there was no other way out. Since the building was under construction, staircases were available. A ladder was positioned from above, allowing around 150 to 200 people to climb across and escape," Singh said.

He added that the fire was concentrated on the ground floor, where two people, believed to be a couple, died in the blaze.

Police said a man and a woman fell critically ill after inhaling smoke and were rushed to the district hospital by ambulance, where doctors declared them dead.

An FIR has been registered against the building owner/leaseholder under relevant provisions of law, and the accused has been taken into custody. Further legal action is underway.
