Fake PhD scam rocks Karnataka as 249 guest lecturers face police cases, blacklist
Karnataka has ordered criminal cases against 249 guest lecturers after verification found they had submitted fake or invalid PhD certificates to secure jobs in government degree colleges. The lecturers have been removed from service, permanently blacklisted from future recruitment, and excluded from the ongoing hiring process.
A major recruitment fraud has come to light in Karnataka after the Collegiate Education Department found that 249 guest lecturers had secured jobs in government first grade colleges using fake or invalid PhD certificates.
Following verification by universities, the state has ordered that all 249 lecturers be removed from service immediately, permanently blacklisted from future recruitment, and booked under criminal law.
UNIVERSITIES EXPOSED THE FRAUD
The lecturers had been appointed during the 2025-26 recruitment cycle through an online counselling process for around 10,000 guest faculty positions across government degree colleges.
As part of the state's verification process, principals were required to send academic documents, including postgraduate degrees, NET, K-SET, MPhil and PhD certificates, to the respective universities for authentication.
The universities later confirmed that 249 PhD certificates were either fake or invalid, prompting the department to initiate action.
FIRS, BLACKLIST AND IMMEDIATE REMOVAL
The Commissioner of Collegiate Education has instructed college principals to register criminal cases against the lecturers and submit compliance reports within a week.
Apart from losing their current positions, the lecturers have also been permanently blacklisted from all future guest faculty recruitment, including the ongoing 2026-27 selection process.
Officials said candidates who obtained government jobs by submitting false academic credentials had committed fraud against the state.
BIGGEST IMPACT IN KALYANA KARNATAKA
According to officials, 148 of the 249 lecturers were posted in the Kalyana Karnataka region.
Among the affected districts:
- Kalaburagi: 33 cases
- Yadgir: 31
- Bidar: 28
- Raichur: 24
- Koppal: 13
- Vijayanagar: 9
- Ballari: 2
Some colleges recorded particularly high numbers of fake certificates, with one government college in Bidar reporting 19 such appointments.
HOW THE SCAM WAS DETECTED
The department said the fake certificates surfaced because of a mandatory post-recruitment verification system introduced for guest faculty appointments.
College-level committees first examined the documents before forwarding them to universities for authentication. Once universities flagged the certificates, senior departmental committees reviewed the cases before ordering dismissals.
