GATE 2027: Exam dates announced, IIT Madras introduces Robotics paper
IIT Madras has announced the GATE 2027 schedule, with exams on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21. A new Robotics paper, revised syllabus, DigiLocker integration, and updated eligibility norms are among the key changes.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced the examination schedule for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. The national-level entrance test will be conducted on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, in two shifts each day — forenoon and afternoon.
IIT Madras is organising GATE 2027 in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and other IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (GATE), Ministry of Education. First introduced in 1983, the examination marks its 45th edition this year.
The online application process is expected to begin in mid-August 2026 through the official GATE 2027 portal. To enhance security and streamline the examination process, IIT Madras has announced that candidate registration will be integrated with DigiLocker and facial authentication, enabling smoother verification and entry at examination centres.
IIT Madras has revised the GATE syllabus for all test papers for the first time in five years to reflect changing academic trends and industry requirements.
NEW PAPER INTRODUCED
As part of the update, a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper has been introduced from GATE 2027. The Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has also been restructured and will now be offered as a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE).
GATE 2027 will continue to be conducted only in English and will comprise 30 test papers. Candidates will have the option of appearing for either one or two papers, subject to the combinations prescribed by the organising institute.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
There is no minimum or maximum age limit for appearing in GATE 2027. Candidates who have completed, or are currently in the final year of, a bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, arts, or commerce are eligible to apply.
As per the revised eligibility criteria introduced earlier, students in the third year of their BTech programme are also permitted to appear for the examination.
