Odisha man dies days after wife hits him on head with phone during argument

The family has alleged that the head injury from the June 21 domestic dispute eventually led to his death. However, police have said the exact cause of death will be established only after the post-mortem examination.

A man in Odisha died days after his wife allegedly hit him on the head with a mobile phone during a domestic dispute, with his family claiming that the injury sustained in the incident led to his death.

The incident was reported from Chimini Bhatipada village in Odisha's Balangir district.

The deceased, Swapneswar Mishra, was admitted to a hospital on July 9 after complaining of severe abdominal pain. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to another hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

According to a complaint filed by his father, Prafulla Kumar Mishra, Swapneswar and his wife, Anamika Satpathy, had a heated argument on June 21. During the altercation, Anamika allegedly threw a mobile phone at him, hitting him on the head and causing an injury that required stitches.

Swapneswar's family has alleged that the injury sustained during the incident eventually led to his death. Police, however, said the exact cause of death will be established only after the post-mortem examination.

Following his death, Prafulla approached Laxmijore Police Station and lodged a complaint against Anamika, seeking legal action.

The matter had earlier been settled at the police station after both families reached a mutual understanding. However, the issue resurfaced after Swapneswar's death, with his family accusing his wife of being responsible.

Prafulla also alleged that after the dispute, Anamika's family took the couple's young daughter away. He claimed that while undergoing treatment, Swapneswar repeatedly expressed his wish to see his daughter one last time, but she was not brought to meet him.

Police have registered the complaint and launched an investigation. The body has been sent to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, police sources said Swapneswar had been suffering from liver disease for a considerable period. They said he developed severe abdominal pain and vomiting on July 9, following which he was hospitalised.

Police have registered an Unnatural Death case and said further action will be taken based on the post-mortem findings and the outcome of the investigation.
