Tripura floods displace 11,000 people, over 4,000 houses damaged in 3 districts
Heavy rainfall triggered floods in three Tripura districts, displacing around 11,000 people, damaging more than 4,000 houses and forcing thousands into relief camps, even as the flood situation began to improve with receding river levels.

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has triggered floods in three districts of Tripura, displacing around 11,000 people and forcing them to take shelter in relief camps, officials said on Friday. While no fatalities have been reported, more than 4,000 houses have been damaged.
The flood situation showed signs of improvement during the day as the swollen Manu River began receding following a lull in rainfall. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy rain in several parts of the state.
State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Project Director Sanat Kumar Das said 6,068 people from Unakoti district were accommodated in 35 relief camps. "The flood situation improved on Friday as the river water receded," he said.
In neighbouring Dhalai and Khowai districts, another 4,909 flood-affected people were staying in relief camps.
"Around 11,000 people were rendered homeless due to floods triggered by heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. No deaths have been reported so far, but 4,027 houses have been damaged," Das said.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA Birajit Sinha alleged that the Water Resources Department's failure to repair sluice gates in time led to flash floods in several low-lying areas of Unakoti, Dhalai and Khowai districts.
Responding to the allegation, a government official said that 19 sluice gates in Kailashahar subdivision, designed to regulate the flow of the Manu River, could not be repaired because of delays in finalising the tender process.
The official added that repairing the damaged sluice gates and strengthening the river embankments was essential to protect Kailashahar from future flooding.
The floods have affected Unakoti, Dhalai and Khowai districts, leaving around 11,000 people displaced and damaging 4,027 houses, even as the situation began to improve with receding river levels.
