India's tourism and hospitality sector is expected to create nearly 3 million new jobs by 2028, with hotels, restaurants and food service businesses accounting for the overwhelming majority of employment opportunities, according to a report by the Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council (THSC).

The report projects the sector's workforce to grow from 11.8 million in 2024 to 14.8 million by 2028, driven by rising domestic travel, expanding hospitality infrastructure, and increasing demand for food and accommodation services.

Among all segments, accommodation and food services will remain the largest employer, accounting for around 93 per cent of the sector's total workforce. Employment in the sub-sector is expected to increase from 11 million in 2024 to 13.8 million by 2028, making it the biggest contributor to new job creation over the next four years.

The study estimates that almost nine out of every 10 new jobs in tourism and hospitality will come from hotels, restaurants, cafes, resorts and other food service establishments.

DEMAND ACROSS SKILL LEVELS

The report indicates that hiring will span all skill categories rather than being limited to specialised roles.

Of the projected 3 million additional jobs, around 1.1 million will require skilled workers, another 1.1 million will be for semi-skilled employees, while nearly 0.8 million positions are expected to be created for unskilled workers.

This suggests that the sector will continue to offer opportunities for both fresh entrants and experienced professionals.

HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS TO DRIVE HIRING

The report identifies several job roles expected to witness strong demand over the coming years.

In the hotel segment, banquet managers and assistant chefs are projected to see significant growth, while in food services, assistant chefs and barista executives are among the fastest-growing roles.

As hospitality businesses increasingly adopt digital technologies, demand is also expected to rise for professionals in digital marketing and revenue management, reflecting the sector's shift towards technology-enabled operations.

MAHARASHTRA AMONG TOP JOB-GENERATING STATES

The report identifies Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu as the states expected to generate the highest incremental demand for tourism and hospitality workers over the next four years. Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh are also projected to witness steady employment growth.

SECTOR POISED FOR SUSTAINED EXPANSION

The projections are based on employment trends, Gross Value Added (GVA) growth, and labour force data. According to the report, the tourism and hospitality sector is expected to record an average annual GVA growth of 5.9 per cent between 2022 and 2028, supporting continued expansion in employment.

With millions of new jobs expected across hotels, restaurants, and allied services, the sector is likely to remain one of India's largest employment generators, offering opportunities across skilled, semi-skilled, and entry-level roles.
