BATWARA 1947

Theatres | August 14

An interesting subversion of the Sunny Deol image of a son of the soil who batters Pakistanis with a handpump. Produced by Aamir Khan, this film stars Deol as a Muslim who leaves for Pakistan with his family from India during the Partition. Circumstances have him defending an old Hindu woman (Shabana Azmi) from communal forces in his new country.

AWARAPAN 2

Theatres | August 14

When every Bollywood star is rehashing their screen image for the big bucks, Emraan Hashmi won’t be left behind. He returns in the sequel to his 2007 emo-thriller, where he played a brooding assassin. The director this time is Nitin Kakkar, who made the fabulous Filmistaan back in 2012.

IKKA

Netflix | July 10

Another Sunny Deol starrer, this legal thriller evokes memories of his role in Damini (1993). Here he is pitted against Akshaye Khanna, fresh off Dhurandhar, playing yet another stylish and arrogant bloke—up to no good but armed with the best crooked smile in all of tinseltown.

DHAMAAL 4

Theatres | July 10

Indra Kumar is among the few Bollywood old-timers who still make commercial potboilers with neanderthal sensibilities. His Dhamaal franchise includes multi-starrer capers involving stolen money, cat-and-mouse chases, the works. Ajay Devgn leads a huge cast.

PRAHAAR–THE UJJWAL NIKAM STORY

Theatres | August 7

Rajkummar Rao steps into the role of star public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam (’93 Mumbai blasts; 26/11; 2012 Delhi rape case), currently a Rajya Sabha MP. The director is Avinash Arun, who has mostly helmed indies, including the fabulous Killa, along with episodes of Paatal Lok.
