Vijay Varma on his casting couch experience: Model coordinator got touchy-feely
Actor Vijay Varma recalled an uncomfortable encounter with a modelling coordinator during his struggling days in Hyderabad. He said the experience discouraged him briefly before pushing him to pursue acting with greater resolve.
Actor Vijay Varma has recalled facing the casting couch during his struggling years, speaking about an uncomfortable encounter with a modelling coordinator when he briefly tried modelling in Hyderabad. The actor, known for projects such as Gully Boy, Dahaad and Darlings, said his journey in the industry was far from easy.
In an interview with Prakhar Gupta on his YouTube channel, Vijay said, “I tried modelling in Hyderabad, just small-time, amateur-level work. But I came across this weird model coordinator. He started to misbehave with me a little bit, like just trying to get a little touchy-feely."
"I said, ‘Bro, what is this? What are you doing?’ So I got discouraged immediately. You get discouraged very quickly when you’re still inexperienced. Then I thought, I think I should address it head-on. If acting is what I want to do, then I have to do it," the actor added.
Vijay said the experience left him discouraged, but he then decided to pursue acting seriously. Even then, he said, the road ahead remained difficult.
Vijay recalled being turned away by Sutradhar School of Acting in Hyderabad, where instructors doubted his commitment and refused to give him a chance, believing he wouldn't stick with it.
The actor then applied to the Film and Television Institute of India, but was rejected there as well. He secured admission only on his second attempt and went on to study acting at the institute alongside actors such as Rajkummar Rao and Jaideep Ahlawat.
On the work front, Vijay was last seen in Vibhu Puri’s directorial Gustaakh Ishq. The film also featured Naseeruddin Shah, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sharib Hashmi, and marked fashion designer Manish Malhotra’s debut as a film producer.
More recently, Vijay featured in the Prime Video series Matka King, which traces the transformation of a humble and enterprising cotton trader into a powerful gambling don as he creates a new gambling game called Matka.
