Digger trailer: An eccentric, unrecognisable Tom Cruise finds new impossible mission
Actor Tom Cruise appears in an eccentric new avatar as oil baron Digger Rockwell in the first trailer for Digger. The dark comedy places him at the centre of a disaster of his own making as he races to contain the fallout.

Actor Tom Cruise literally had to dig deep for his latest starring role, as the trailer for his dark comedy Digger was released on July 13. The film presents Cruise in an eccentric and largely unrecognisable avatar as Digger Rockwell.
Described as "a comedy of catastrophic proportions", the Warner Bros film is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant. Cruise plays an oil baron described as "the most powerful man in the world", whose company may have triggered an ecological disaster that could also spark a nuclear war.
In the two-minute, 38 second trailer, Cruise’s Digger Rockwell is shown with a thick Southern accent, a pot-belly and thinning white hair fashioned in an unconvincing comb-over. As the logline puts it, Digger "embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything."
Actor John Goodman plays an ailing US president who implores Digger to fix the crisis he has unleashed. The ensemble cast also includes Sandra Huller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Emma D’Arcy.
Cruise, in an interview with Variety about the black comedy, Cruise shared that the role pushed him in an entirely new direction under the guidance of the two-time Academy Award-winning director. "I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro," he said. The trailer positions Digger as a high-stakes dark comedy built around a powerful man racing to contain the fallout of a disaster linked to his own actions.
Cruise had earlier unveiled a sneak peek of Digger at CinemaCon 2026, expressing excitement about the promising start for the film industry. Cruise shared several photos on Instagram from the event held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where he appeared on stage with director Alejandro G Inarritu, whom he referred to as his “dear friend.”
Digger is co-produced by Inarritu, Cruise and Mary Parent. The film is set for a worldwide theatrical release on October 2, 2026.
Cruise's last theatrical release was director Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2026), the eighth installment in the M:I film series.
