Apple Pencil updates coming soon, may launch alongside next-gen iPad Pro
Apple is reportedly working on two new Apple Pencil models, including a new Apple Pencil Pro and a new USB-C variant. The new models are expected to launch alongside next-generation iPad Pro models next year.
It’s been more than two years since Apple last launched the Apple Pencils with a USB-C port. Now, according to a new report, the Cupertino-based tech giant is planning to unveil two new Apple Pencil models soon. As the month of September approaches, the iPhone maker is gearing up to launch a series of new products, but the report hints that Apple Pencils won’t roll out alongside them.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests those two new Pencils alongside next-generation iPad Pro models will launch next year. He mentioned new versions of the lower-end Apple Pencil with a USB-C port, as well as the higher-end Apple Pencil Pro, which are reportedly in development.
In the report, Gurman also discussed “new battery systems” that are said to be part of the new Apple Pencil models. If the report turns out to be true, that could mean that Apple is developing these models minding the upcoming EU requirements that emphasise making batteries more replaceable.
As of now, no more details about the purported Apple Pencil have been revealed. Apple first unveiled the USB-C port Pencil in November 2023, followed by the Apple Pencil Pro in May 2024.
The Apple Pencil Pro, priced at Rs 11,900, is the more advanced option and comes with features like squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, hover preview, and double-tap to switch tools. Squeezing the Pencil Pro brings up a palette to quickly switch tools, line weights, and colours, while a built-in gyroscope allows for precise rotation of shaped pen and brush tools. A custom haptic engine delivers a light pulse whenever you squeeze or double tap, confirming the action. The Apple Pencil Pro is compatible with the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models.
The more affordable Apple Pencil with a USB-C port is priced at Rs 7,900 and offers pixel-perfect precision, low latency, tilt sensitivity, and hover preview, which lets you see exactly where the tip will land before it touches the screen. It pairs and charges via USB-C and attaches magnetically to the side of the iPad for storage. Unlike the Pro, it has broader compatibility and works across a wider range of iPad models, including older generations of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and the standard iPad.
