Hyderabad woman told parents she was 'going out' but went to Delhi for CJP protest
A Hyderabad woman travelled to Delhi to join the CJP protest and documented the journey online. Her posts drew support on social media, including an offer of stay from filmmaker Vinod Kapri.
She told her parents she was stepping out. Instead, she boarded a flight from Hyderabad to Delhi, alone.
With crowdfunded money, a bag full of medicines for fellow protesters and a great deal of uncertainty, Disha Sharma, a flight attendant, set out for Jantar Mantar. Her journey soon caught the internet's attention and even prompted filmmaker Vinod Kapri to offer her a place to stay.
In a video shared on Instagram before boarding her flight, Disha admitted she was anxious about travelling alone.
"Hi guys, I just told my parents I am going out. I am taking a flight from Hyderabad to Delhi and I am damn scared," she said.
In the caption accompanying her post, Disha explained that she had crowdfunded her journey to Delhi. She also said she had collected medicines and other essential supplies to distribute among those gathered at Jantar Mantar, where students have been staging demonstrations over the NEET paper leak issue.
Her video soon found its way to X, where a user reshared it with the caption: "She has no contacts there but she thinks she will be okay. Please help her Dear Delhi, if you see her. Even I think, she will be okay. You go girl!!"
The post caught the attention of filmmaker Vinod Kapri, who responded with a heartfelt offer.
"Treat my home in Delhi (Noida) as your home. If you need anything at all, just DM me here on X, or on Instagram, Facebook, or Messenger. It will be an honour to look after you as a father," Kapri wrote.
He added, "I have a special affection for Hyderabad because I was born there. But, nevertheless, my home is open to every student who has come to Delhi with hope and conviction. Stay safe. God bless you."
Since arriving in Delhi, Disha has continued to post updates from the protest site. In one of her recent videos, she said she spent the night at Jantar Mantar along with other demonstrators and would be returning home soon after participating in the protest.
The demonstration at Jantar Mantar has entered another day, with students from several states continuing to gather at the venue. Protesters have been demanding action over the paper leak issue, while videos from the site continue to circulate widely across social media, drawing support from people across the country.
The satirical movement, founded by Abhijeet Dipke, has been demanding accountability over the examination irregularities. Activist Sonam Wangchuk's ongoing hunger strike has also drawn attention to the issue.
The agitation, which began on June 20, is demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
During the July 20 march, Delhi Police used baton charges and tear gas shells to stop demonstrators from marching towards Parliament. The CJP alleged that excessive force was used during the police action, while Delhi Police said action was taken after protesters attempted to breach security arrangements.
