Delhi theft cracked after delivery worker flaunts iPhone 15, plans Royal Enfield
Delhi Police arrested two men after tracing a Maidan Garhi house theft through a delivery worker's sudden splurge. The case showed how unusual spending patterns helped investigators recover jewellery, cash and bank proceeds.
Delhi Police said they solved a theft case after spotting unusual spending by a 20-year-old delivery worker, including the purchase of an iPhone 15, new clothes and plans to buy a Royal Enfield motorcycle worth around Rs 3 lakh. The police said the probe led them to Deepak and his alleged associate Gunjan, and they recovered stolen gold and silver jewellery and cash.
An e-FIR in the case was registered on August 31. Police said Deepak, 20, and Gunjan, 30, were later arrested in connection with a theft at a house in Maidan Garhi.
During the investigation, police received information on September 14 that a delivery worker, later identified as Deepak, had recently bought an expensive phone and clothes. "He was also allegedly planning to buy a Royal Enfield motorcycle costing around Rs 3 lakh," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anant Mittal said in a statement.
Police said they raided Deepak’s rented accommodation and apprehended him. During questioning, he allegedly told investigators that he had entered the complainant’s house through the roof, taken a purse containing cash and a key to an almirah, and then stolen gold and silver articles and cash kept inside.
According to police, the stolen property was later traced to Gunjan, who allegedly helped dispose of the gold through a jeweller in Mehrauli. From Deepak, police recovered an iPhone 15, Rs 27,500 in cash, seven pairs of silver anklets, five pairs of silver toe rings and a silver hand bracelet or bangle. From Gunjan, they recovered about 1 kg of silver articles and 103 grams of gold articles. Police said they also traced the financial proceeds, including a cheque for Rs 2.58 lakh linked to the transaction, froze suspected proceeds in a bank account, and recovered an FD of Rs 2 lakh created from the cheque amount.
Police said the case, registered on August 31, was cracked after investigators followed signs of sudden spending and traced the stolen jewellery, cash and related proceeds to the two accused.
