A 21-year-old medical aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli, after failing to secure a medical seat in the first round of NEET-UG counselling.
The daughter of an IT professional, Sruthi Laya completed her schooling in 2023 and later enrolled at a NEET coaching centre as she prepared to pursue a career as a doctor.
Although she had been unable to secure a medical seat after appearing for the NEET-UG examination last year, she prepared intensively for another attempt and successfully cleared the entrance examination this year.
News reports, however, suggest she was devastated when she learnt that the recently released list for the first round of counselling did not include her name. She reportedly went to bed that night but was nowhere to be found the next morning.
When Laya's family members searched the property and the surrounding areas, they allegedly found her hanging inside a shed near the house.
Local police promptly arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and transferred it to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
