Japanese shopkeeper fixes Indian woman's cycle for free, she returns with a surprise

A bicycle accident in Japan left an Indian woman with an injured shoulder and a broken phone, but what she carried away from the incident was something far more memorable. When a Japanese bicycle shopkeeper repaired her damaged cycle for free and refused to take any money, she returned in the rain with a meal for him, turning the incident into a sweet story of kindness.

The woman, Sonam Midha, shared the experience on Instagram, recalling how her bicycle slipped while she was riding to work in the rain. She hurt her shoulder, damaged the bicycle’s handle and also broke her iPhone screen in the fall.

After reaching work, Sonam told a colleague what had happened and was given some band-aids. During her lunch break, she decided to take the damaged bicycle to a nearby repair shop, expecting to pay for whatever repairs were needed.

She was familiar with the cost of services in Japan. Sonam recalled that even getting the angle of her bicycle seat adjusted had cost her 500 yen when she bought it.

But the shopkeeper surprised her.

Seeing the condition of the bicycle, he first asked if she was okay. Sonam said she was touched that his immediate concern was for her rather than the damaged cycle.

He then repaired the bicycle. When she asked, “Ikura desu ka?” meaning “How much?”, his response was simple: “No price.”

The shopkeeper had fixed her bicycle for free. He also gave her advice on how to cycle safely in the rain and avoid another fall.

The gesture stayed with Sonam. Wanting to return the kindness, she went to a nearby Indian restaurant during her lunch break, packed some food and cycled back to the shop.

She said the shopkeeper looked worried when he saw her returning in the rain, apparently thinking that she had fallen again or that something was wrong with the bicycle.

Instead, Sonam told him she had gone to have lunch and had brought something for him.

The shopkeeper, she recalled, became emotional and visibly happy at the gesture. “My kindness made my day and I will always remember this day,” Sonam said.
