A street performance in Kolkata has quietly turned into a story of dignity, compassion, and recognition after industrialist Anand Mahindra stepped in to support an elderly violinist whose viral video had moved thousands online.

The musician, Bhagwan Mallick, was traced and assisted after Mahindra came across his performance and decided to help. Sharing the update, he wrote, “I’m grateful to Soumyadip and his colleague from our Kolkata office for locating Bhagwan Mallick and his wife, and delivering my small contribution.”

But it was Mallick’s response that struck a deeper chord. Mahindra shared, “His way of saying thank you? By playing Saare Jahan Se Achha. Dignity and grace, personified. I hope others in the community will visit him and simply listen. Because if there’s one thing artistes want more than anything else, it’s an audience.”

Watch it here:

The video that brought Mallick into the spotlight was originally shared by content creator Aradhana Chatterjee, who documented his life and music.

In her post, she revealed that Mallick lost his parents at a young age and learnt the violin from his father, carrying forward both his memory and his craft.

After his father’s death, music became not just a passion but his only means of survival. Mallick now earns around Rs 100 a day, performing at locations such as New Town Bus Stand, DLF subway, and New Town Art Street, usually between 5 pm and 11 pm. His wife often accompanies him, sitting quietly beside him as he plays.

What makes his story resonate is not just hardship, but endurance and the quiet persistence of an artist who continues to perform despite uncertainty.

And now, with Mahindra’s gesture bringing attention and support, his music has found something he has long relied on: an audience willing to listen.
