Telangana parents watch daughter's US wedding via livestream, shower blessings online

A wedding livestream from the US became the mandapam for two parents who could not travel to their daughter’s big day. As she got married, they showered their blessings on the screen from thousands of kilometres away in Telangana.

The couple from Telangana’s Suryapet district watched their only daughter, Himabindu, get married online and performed rituals of an Indian wedding through a screen.

Himabindu, who works in the US, met Rohith Kumar, a native of NTR district, while living there. The two fell in love and eventually decided to get married. Their wedding took place on Friday night.

But there was one painful detail missing from the celebrations: Himabindu’s parents could not be there in person.

Instead, Jayaraju and Jyothi watched the ceremony virtually. When the time came for the traditional ritual, they picked up akshintalu, the sacred rice used during wedding ceremonies, and showered it on the screen as their daughter and son-in-law exchanged wedding vows.

It was a simple gesture, but one that bridged a considerable physical distance.

For Himabindu, the moment meant having her parents present in the only way possible. For Jayaraju and Jyothi, it meant being able to perform a tradition they might otherwise have missed altogether.

The wedding also reflected how technology has quietly changed the way families participate in important milestones when distance makes physical presence difficult. A video call or livestream may not replace the importance of physical presence, but on occasions when thousands of kilometres stand between loved ones, a screen can become a small but meaningful bridge.
