Officials conducted a nearly five-hour inspection at the BMC headquarters canteen before issuing a notice to its operator, Kamal Caterers, directing it to immediately suspend all operations.
According to officials, the inspection was prompted by complaints regarding the quality of food served at the canteen after a fly was allegedly found in a glass of milk. During the inspection, FDA teams assessed the overall hygiene conditions, food handling practices and compliance with prescribed safety norms.
Following the inspection, the FDA sealed the canteen and instructed the operator to halt operations until the identified deficiencies are rectified and the establishment complies with the required food safety standards.
Separately, the BMC's Health and Labour Department also initiated action against the canteen operator. Officials imposed a penalty of approximately INR 50,000 on Kamal Caterers over the lapses found during the inspection.
The FDA said the action forms part of its wider campaign to strengthen food safety enforcement and ensure that eateries operating in public institutions adhere to prescribed hygiene norms. The canteen will remain closed until further orders and may resume operations only after addressing the deficiencies identified during the inspection and obtaining the necessary clearance from the authorities.
