The UGC has allowed eligible universities to offer one-year postgraduate programmes in online and ODL modes. Students with a four-year Bachelor's degree with Honours can now pursue eligible one-year postgraduate programmes through online and distance learning, subject to UGC norms.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has permitted eligible higher education institutions (HEIs) to offer one-year postgraduate programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online mode, provided they already have approval to run the corresponding two-year postgraduate programme.
The decision comes through a circular issued on July 28, replacing an earlier notification released on July 24. The move aims to expand flexible learning opportunities while ensuring academic standards remain unchanged.
WHO CAN OFFER THESE COURSES?
The UGC has clarified that not every university can immediately launch a one-year postgraduate programme.
Only those HEIs that are already recognised or entitled by the UGC to offer a two-year postgraduate programme in ODL or online mode can introduce the corresponding one-year course in the same discipline.
The university must also obtain approval from its statutory academic bodies, including the Board of Studies, Academic Council and Executive Council, before launching the programme.
WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE PROGRAMME?
Admission to these programmes will be restricted to students who have successfully completed a four-year Bachelor's degree with Honours, as envisioned under NEP 2020.
The UGC has also clarified that professional programmes such as MBA, MCA and PGDM will continue to follow the eligibility criteria prescribed by their respective regulatory bodies.
WHAT UNIVERSITIES MUST FOLLOW
The Commission has asked institutions to ensure that every one-year postgraduate programme fully complies with NEP 2020, the UGC's Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes, and the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, along with any subsequent amendments.
It has also stressed that the curriculum, learning resources, assessment methods, credit requirements and other academic standards must remain in line with existing UGC regulations and statutory norms.
